Syntagma Square formerly known as Platanos Square, took the name after a plane-tree that still stands right outside Nafplio's Archaeological Museum. Under that tree, the country's politicians would deliver remarks. It is a lovely large area in the heart of the city, encircled by charming tavernas and cafés. The old parliament, the Palace of the first Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias, the old mosque, the church of Agios Georgios, and the fleet warehouse—which now houses the archaeological museum with exhibits from neighbouring sites—are among the historic structures that border Syntagma Square. There are still the homes of a number of 1821 leaders.
